Logistics Industry
The logistics industry is larger than the transportation industry, with regard to the transportation of goods. Transportation focuses on the movement of goods from one place to the other, while the logistics industry implies refers, not only the delivery of goods, but also to the handling, storing, and packaging of goods.
Because the UAE is a commercial hub for many enterprises, logistics plays a critical role in ensuring that goods are delivered on time and in sufficient quantities to keep the business cycle going. As goods and things move throughout the world, transporting pests of foreign origin mandates quarantine screening as a legal requirement to prevent foreign pest infiltration into the UAE.
The storage of foods and other products presents a challenge to the pest management professional. There are over 25 different pests and several species of animal pests (mainly rodents and birds) that are attracted to the stored products (locally produced or imported high-value products) and cause contamination problems in warehouses.
Many aspects of pest management in warehouses and food processing areas are the same, and pest control in these facilities is critical. It is well known that a large proportion of actions taken by the regulatory agencies against food plants are those related to food contamination by pests in the warehouses.
Logistics facilities are at risk for many pests because of:
- quarantined pests are often carried on to the warehouses through the contaminated shipping containers,
- all shipments should be inspected before they are off-loaded. If an infestation is suspected, under no circumstances should the product be unloaded
- pallets can harbor many different insect pests, rodents, birds, and even snakes, and commonly hitchhike via pallets into product storage areas, therefore, all pallets should be inspected
